It might sound like not a long time but I left Kharkov 5,5 years ago. During this time Ukraine has changed a lot and it's not the same I left it anymore...

I do believe that everything change... Even people we used to know... Moreover we ourself change: we have new priorities, new values, new dreams etc... But I d say it just takes time to get used to everything again.. Most probality you didnt feel youself like an American from the very first day of you stay in the US?! it took you time to get used to... A getting-used-to-process costs us time even if we just moved to another city... Therefore I think if you should ever come back to the Ukraine and stay for more than half a year, you will say you are an Ukrainian and you never were anyone else... But people seldom come back to the Ukr... but let it be another topic...

However I still want to ask, if you feel like totally American? Or there is still something that differs you, may be you way of thinking from others?

What about books. When I read books of American writers I hardly use dictionary. But reading of British books sometimes is a kind of challenge :-) For example I cannot even compare Stephen King with Edgar Allan Poe, or, when I read Neil Gaiman’s “American Gods” it just was easy, but when I read Douglas Adams’ “Dirk Gently Holistic Agency” – it was a kind of complication to me :-) Easy reading requires continuous practice :-)

I read "Angels and Demons" by Dan Brown and then "Shalimar the Clown" by Salman Rushdie right after that. I can't even describe the difference in quality between these two books. After reading the second one, first one looks like a pulp fiction (better than Neznanskiy, etc, though :-) ); it's written using simple language, some words being constantly reapeated. For example, I counted that word "starle/startled/startling" was used 4 times on the same page, describing the same situation.

I enjoyed reading the second one so much. Salman Rushdie doesn't use Shakespearian" tongue, but, still, it's like you said, like comparing S.King with Edgar A. Poe.

I'm not sure if there's a pattern, but Dan Brown is an American author and Salman Rushdie (originally Indian) is a British :-) Apparently many of the American authors use poor language.

i dont think you should take it as a pattern. i ve just finished reading "a long way down" written by Nick Hornby, who IS an English novelist. The used vocabulary was very small. (But I enjoyed reading it and would recommend it to everybody). Comparing this book with Da Vici Code by Dan Brown, I d say the second one was more challeging to read ... at least for me

I first read Da Vinci Code, and only then Angels and Daemons. I have to agree here, Da Vinci is better written (probably because A&D was first, and Da Vinci came out later).

As of 'pattern', so far it seems like, maybe it's not a pattern, but rather a trend to me :-)

It seems to me that in the country I m now living in all people have sex just after they are sure they are in love for at least next 1000 years and are together already for about half a year... if you think about sex with a person you like only you like a bitch... and forget about one-night-stand - it is something unthoughtful here.

also why are you looking for complicated language? I like things that are funny or interesting in some way... it doesnt matter for me how it have been written as long as i can understand it...
want some challange -> read Perfume by Süskind ;)

P.S. I read Illuminati by Brown first and it was the best one on my opinion

I'm not looking for complicated language, even though I enjoy learning new interesting words; I just like to enjoy the tongue.

I might give Illuminati a try.

Today I'm going to start reading Salman Rushdie's "Satanic Verses". BTW, he was sentensed to death in Iran for writing this book.

Sure I am not 100% American- I don't understand a lot of idioms, jokes and some cultural moments, only because I didn't grow up here but I am glad I didn't. I will always be a Ukrainian girl in the US, the country of immigrants, and I am comfortable with it :)
