April 18th marked the 111th year anniversary
of the Great Earthquake and Fire of San Francisco, California.
Experts believe that it was approximately 7.7 - 7.9 magnitude quake
that lasted for one minute
as a result of the rupturing of the northernmost stretch of the San Andreas Fault
which alongside the city of San Francisco and below it through its peninsula 800 miles to the middle of the state.
What followed the massive quake was a devastating fire
that actually did more damage and killed more people than the quake.
Thousands lost their lives and hundreds of thousands lost their homes.
It is a testament to the fighting spirit and strength of character
that the city quickly rebuilt itself into an even more culturally affluent
and significant city that to this day represents a progressive,
modern and educated community of diversity and ingenuity.
No wonder its Silicon Valley and environs are home to
Google, Apple, Facebook, Intel, Yahoo and Twitter to name but a few.
We mourn the loss of so many while we celebrate the accomplishments of their descendants and survivors.
