Meeting of Modern Science and School Physics:
College for School Teachers of Physics in ICTP
27 April - 3 May 2011
Miramare, Trieste, Italy
Topics and Nature
The main idea of this event is to bring together for several days at the
ICTP selected teachers of physics from different countries and
well-known scientists from various fields of modern physics. The
lectures will be carried out at a popular level, carefully tuned to the
level of the audience.
There will be four classes of lectures:
Modern physics at first hand: This principal field which will cover
70-75% of the duration of the College and will consist of 1-hour
lectures delivered by well-known, widely-recognized experts in
corresponding fields. The lectures will be devoted to the fundamental
discoveries of the XXth century, their important applications and actual
problems of XXIst century physics.
Physics around us: This part of the college activity will demonstrate
the best examples of popularization of physics for a wide audience.
Useful methods of ?university? physics which can be adopted in school
physics: Here some of the invited scientists will demonstrate how some
methods and tricks of theoretical physicists can be used in elementary
physics, developing intuition and understanding of the subject by students.
Modern methods of teaching physics
Participation
Teachers and scientists from all countries which are members of the
United Nations, UNESCO or IAEA may attend the School. As it will be
conducted in English, participants should have an adequate working
knowledge of that language. Although the main purpose of the Centre is
to help research workers from developing countries, through a programme
of training activities within a framework of international cooperation,
a limited number of teachers and post-doctoral scientists from developed
countries are also welcome to attend.
As a rule, travel and subsistence expenses of the participants should be
borne by the home institution. Every effort should be made by candidates
to secure support for their fare (or at least half-fare). However,
limited funds are available for some participants who are nationals of,
and working in, a developing country, and who are not more than 45 years
old. Such support is available only for those who attend the entire
activity. There is no registration fee.
