I've studied IELTS, but decided not to pass exams so far (because the results are valid for 2 years only)
The standard course takes about a year. I studied in IH. But in fact, this can take less time if you study individually.
As for 7 - this depends on your current level. Anyway, U should find a good teacher

When do you plan to pass the exam? And how long did you study in IH? What IELTS test do you want to pass? Academic or General? I should pass the General test in Jun-Jul, 2008.
What abou you?

I've studied for about a year. I would rather pass academic ones.
I don not plan exams for the current year or two as i need those for myself only, besides i have a newborn son, so i do not have time to go to Kiev ;)
Besides, i'm comming to the oppinion that as soon as i have time i'd like to go professiency level study and pass the corresponding exams (according to which i could be deemed a native speaker :))

Hey mate,
I did, but it was several years ago.
I cannot say it was too hard, but yeah... it's not easy, especially if your current level is not too high. I would recommend you to practice speaking and writing. Reading and listening skills should come naturally if you have enough exposure to English. These 2 sections (Speaking & Writing) seems to be quite difficult for most of the people.
It took me about 4-5 month to prepare for the exam. I can't say I was a good student, I did not study like a crazy, but I spent a lot of time writing essays and all those bloody letters. Reading & Listening - I just did several sample tests and that's it.

Any good teacher would work fine. You need to take lessons regularly.
When you start feeling confident, get IELTS practice exams here: englishtips.org, and do as much of them as you can.

Secret? C'mon, mate... :)
There are not that many places in the world where you might need it... GB, CA, AU, NZ (most likely AU or CA). Am I right? ;)

Well, in that case 5.5 score wont be enough (no matter what the admission criteria is). More or less comfortable level for University study is 7.5-8.0, but not 5.5.
