Is it enough in our modern so fast revolving world to speak only English, so widespread and much spoken. It seems that already every second person speaks English. Is speaking English a benefit or usual requirement not to lag from the world? The matter is that recently I realised that speaking the english lang is usual thing for the most of Europe, exept Spain. and is it better to catch a little knowledge from many languages or to polish one till it shines a hollywood smile....

By the way I was damn shocked when the reception girl in one of hotels in Kiev spoke four languages in front of me. They were English, German, French and Polish. I felt so stupid next to her...
Sure she spoke far from perfect. Sure she probably knew only standard numbers of phrases that she needs for her job (I mean I hope so.. it's kinna difficult to admit somebody is so much smarter then you at the position way below yours), but I was pretty amazed telling you the truth.

A friend of mine knows Russian, Spanish (due to Spanish-speaking husband), German (she lives and works there) and English (just because of "multi-countried" living experience)... And she is not a receptionist, she's a network system engineer. That's the case to envy, I think.
(I just can't imagine how she was able to manage it, indeed.)

but you know, as i don't know which country saying goes, if you learn German and French, you are given English as a present. So if you learn a language, it'll be easier for you to learn another lang of the same branch after. And there is no miracles or magic in this, just spare short period of time to learning every day and you'll become a polyglot soon, 20 min a day is enough. :)

and really when a your paisano starts to speak a language that you cannot understand, you (actually I) start to feel as if something was missed in you life, that this guy made more than you for the same period of time

I met an African student recently. He speaks 7 languages fluently. French, german, spanish, English,Russian, Swahili, Zulu. I was truly amazed. So i was thinking maybe its some form of talent, something given to some people by nature. He told me many Africans do speak at least 2 international languages plus ofcourse their mother tongues. I was flabbergasted.

English in our times like modern latin, so I believe that knowledge of english is compulsory for everyone who wants to communicate internationally. Other languages are not so necessary as for me cause first I want to reach high skills in written and spoken english, fix them and after began to study some other languages depending on my needs in future :)
