Do you know any English Clubs in Kharkov?
Maybe some good place, where all interested people can come and improve their speaking English:)
I know, it's very popular in Moscow. People get together in Cafe and introduce, communicate etc.
I would like to go to the same party, if it's available in Kharkov :yahoo:
(sorry for my crooked English)

to improve english you have to communicate with native speakers, otherwise you'll just pick up the mistakes of other people

Not necessarily. Anyway I'm not sure there are enough native speakers of English in Kharkov to match the demand.
P.S. Mistakes are an inevitable part of a learning process. Practice makes perfect. :класс:

You have to listen to the correct speech to rectify your own mistakes, otherwise you will automatically make the same mistake again and again... No doubt, such clubs would be better than nothing, they may help to speak rather fluently, but they won't help you to understand people outside the club (with funny accents for instance).

You can always listen to the BBC ;)
Honestly, I just don't know what 'the correct speech' is. You can have two
people from London (both native speakers) who won't understand each other.
Really.
Yerkwantai
15-04-2008, 17:52
Listen - yes. But you cannot talk to the BBC :D
Well, that is the rare example, in most cases they manage to understand each other somehow. But that is not the point, you cannot compare the grammatically and phonetically incorrect speech of the foreigner with various ways to pronounce the words, which is the cause of the problem in your example.

There's no such thing as "correct speech". It reminds me of a scene of "Snatch" movie, when an American claimed that England spawned the language, but it seemed that nobody used it anymore.
As well you can watch movies, listen to radio and read books. English books and movies are better (in contrary to American ones), because of grammar and vocabulary.

I agree with you. Reading english books will help you a lot. However there are so many foreigners in Kharkov that speak english. They are always willing to help. This helps them too. You help them with Russian they in return help you with English. I also advise whoever is interested to look for the British Council in Kharkov. (it used to be in Karazin a few years ago. I dont know whether its still open)

I have an idea! You can write what you want to say other people and read the answers from them and then give mouth these dialogs. Тhus you can improve your english. :-)

Whatever. You all know what i meant by "correct English", the English that the native speakers consider as "correct", and not the language mixed with anglicised words and confused meanings that is not understood well outside the small group.

AFAIK there are six major accents in London actually, not to mention a bunch of American ones. So it's rather hard to tell "correct English". But in fact it's quite easy to tell incorrect ones.

Irish Pub is no good guys.
But you can find many ppl who speak American or British English in Universities. For example 'ХПИ' university has many foreign students if u talk 2 them they'll invite u 2 their home church. This is the best experience for all of u so far....
Plus I recomend watching TV shows in English. Such as "Prison Break", "Heroes", "Lost", "24", etc. etc.
Plus play lineage 2\ WOW @ official servers. You'll have english team-speak there. Plus try to find a jod as a translator if you want to improve English.
There are many ways.
But the main question I ask when ppl come to me and say that they want to learn English is: "Y do u need it for" ?
P.S. Retarted ppl won't understand the word "retarted" lol

If you need to regularly talk with a native, check with English schools. Occasionally, they invite interesting and cheerful guys who enjoy talking, learning and sharing. But hurry up, as the most of the schools are going to be closed during the summer.
Another idea is to meet a Peace Corps volunteer here in Kharkov. As a part of their mission, they organize and lead English Clubs.

You’re referring to Mormons who, by the way, are also native speakers.
But I meant guys from Peace Corps which is an US federal agency.
“The Peace Corps traces its roots and mission to 1960, when then Senator John F. Kennedy challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country in the cause of peace by living and working in developing countries. From that inspiration grew an agency of the federal government devoted to world peace and friendship.
Since that time, more than 190,000 Peace Corps Volunteers have been invited by 139 host countries to work on issues ranging from AIDS education to information technology and environmental preservation.
Today's Peace Corps is more vital than ever, working in emerging and essential areas such as information technology and business development, and committing more than 1,000 new Volunteers as a part of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. Peace Corps Volunteers continue to help countless individuals who want to build a better life for themselves, their children, and their communities.”

ok than, no arguments bud! So, I mistook that peace corps with that mormons, but if these mormons were 100 times native speakers, I wouldn't even look at their side! Cause they look like that sect of witnesses of Jehovah.

Ok. I have decided to have an english club on Saturday morning. In the worst case I will have a quiet coffee by myself. Hmm, or maybe that is the best case.
So I will be sitting in Metropol cafe at 11am (Saturday 31st May to be clear) . I will be the one who looks like an englishman.
If Metropol is not suitable then someone suggest somewhere better. Particularly if it rains.

Many of my friends (from school and Univercity later) went there and perfected their English very much. I have read everything above ;) There were funny suggestions
Everything is much more simplier: right in the centre of our city, in the hotel "Kharkiv" (enter in front); don't remember a floor and a room (you may ask, or I can precise). There is Speaking Club absolutely free every Saturday - near 11 a.m.: friendly people, skilled leader (professional translator has been lived abroad), interesting topics, no rules exept mutual respect. This Club is someth. like charity of eng. teaching organization (don't remember name, doesn't matter indeed). So you could come and speak))
It's strange for me noone knows about. I'm sure it's not the only one place in Kharkiv.
